BBC News Presenter Ros Atkins Drum & Bass Mix
Here’s a story I wasn’t expecting to write… BBC News presenter Ros Atkins this week professed his love for drum & bass music and has recorded a D&B mix for BBC 6 Music featuring deep cuts from Ganja Records, Moving Shadow, Metalheadz & Ram Records!
Inspired by Brixton ElectricIn the intro to his mix Ros laid out his inspiration for doing this mix for BBC Radio 6 Music…
“Before the BBC was letting me anywhere near a TV studio I used to DJ drum & bass, and much to my delight Steve Lamacq, & the team at BBC Radio 6 Music, have asked me if I’d like to get behind the decks for todays Desert Island Disco All-Dayer, and of course I said yes“
“This it’s inspired by Brixton Electric in South London. It’s a place I’ve had some great drum & bass nights. Hopefully there are many more to come!“
Ros Atkins Drum & Bass Mix Who Is Ros Atkins?Ros Atkins is a British journalist and broadcaster for the BBC, where he presents Outside Source on BBC World News and the BBC News Channel. He previously hosted World Have Your Say on BBC World News and BBC World Service radio.
Ros is mainly known for his straight-talking style of analysis and explanation, but this week Ros switched things up… Instead of reading the news on the radio he’s done a mix of of his all-time top drum and bass anthems!
In an article on iNews Atkins is quoted as saying that he “Loved dancing to legends like DJ Storm, Dillinja and LTJ Bukem”. This is most definitely reflected in his track selection.
His DJ HistoryIn a thread on his Twitter feed Ros gave a bit more insight into his past as a DJ & event promoter…
“Back in the 90s, along with lots of teenagers in Cornwall, I started going to raves & listening to hardcore and drum & bass.”
“I also started to DJ. Inspired by @therealLTJbukem @DJHYPE_PLAYAZ @KennyDJKen @RAYKEITH1 and others I started to buy a lot of D&B and, through my 20s, in a very amateur fashion, I DJed a range of music in London, Cornwall & Cambridge.

— Ros Atkins (@BBCRosAtkins) January 17, 2022“I also lived in South Africa for a while and, improbably, ended up playing in the D&B room at a huge rave in Joburg train station. (I had an inbuilt advantage as D&B was hard to get in SA back then.)”
“Then in 2006, I got booked to play a festival in Regent’s Park. It was a reasonably sweaty affair… A few days later, our eldest daughter was born and suddenly I had a lot less time and energy! DJing didn’t fit into life so well and I’ve not done a gig since.”
Davina McCall Tweeting About Her Favourite Ram TracksSpeaking on his Facebook Benny V, promoter of Dance Concept & co-owner of Souped Up Records with Serum, made a great point on this subject that resonated with me…
“This Ros Atkins on BBC doing a DnB mix got me thinking. When we were young & into DnB we were in our little clique. No grown ups were into it. Nobody on TV would give it the time of day.”
“Nobody in high profile positions even knew what it was.”
Benny V & Serum“Now as we are getting older we realise that within that clique many years ago we rubbed shoulders with people who have in their own right moved up into positions within society.”
“From Davina McCall tweeting about her favourite Ram tracks. Politician Chuka Umunna telling us he used to mix Jungle. Plus any Urban Pop star brought up in London in the 90s/00s knows who Brockie & Det are, fact!”
“The scene has grown, and everyone within it has too, reaching parts of our culture that was alien to us before. The roots have stretched and we are now everywhere.”
