Reviving the Spirit of Nightlife: Dirtbox Recordings Launch DNB Essentials
Dirtbox Recordings announces DNB Essentials, a new curated series reviving the legacy of Andy C’s Nightlife. Lee UHF leads the first volume, blending Dirtbox talent old and new.
Dirtbox Recordings has announced the launch of DNB Essentials, a new curated series set to arrive on 30 January. The project aims to rekindle the sense of discovery that once defined the golden era of drum and bass compilations, following the closure of RAM Records and the end of Andy C’s celebrated Nightlife series.
The concept behind DNB Essentials is simple but ambitious: a recurring collection that spotlights both established and emerging names within the Dirtbox network, each edition curated and mixed by a different artist. Every release will be issued digitally and on limited vinyl and CD, combining modern accessibility with the physical collectability that remains a cornerstone of drum and bass culture.
The first volume is curated by Lee UHF, who has overseen the track selection and mixed the release. Across the series, the label intends to pair core Dirtbox artists with new talent joining the roster, offering newcomers the chance to contribute to a flagship project and see their music pressed to physical format, the “holy grail” moment for many up-and-coming producers.
To build momentum towards the launch, three singles will lead the campaign: Introspective Thoughts by Lee UHF & Noise Souls on 19 December, No Shame by Diode on 26 December, and Apogee by Zak Meow & Levia on 16 January. The full compilation follows on 30 January in both digital and physical formats.
DNB Essentials arrives as part of a broader label initiative that will see 20 artists join Dirtbox Recordings in the coming year, contributing tracks to future instalments. The project is positioned as an ongoing celebration of curated selection, continuity, and collaboration within drum and bass, values that defined the genre’s formative compilation culture but have been largely absent in recent years.
While DNB Essentials doesn’t claim to replace Nightlife, its mission to fill that creative gap has resonated strongly within the community. By handing curatorial control to different artists each time, the label is creating space for unique perspectives to emerge, and by keeping the focus on musical curation, connection, and the enduring spirit of discovery that continues to drive the genre forward.
DNB Essentials Vol. 1 is released on 30 January via Dirtbox Recordings, available on digital platforms and as limited-edition vinyl and CD.
