Jynx by Hillsdom – Full Review & Analysis

After making their Soulvent debut in 2024 with Good 4 U Essex-based production duo Hillsdom return to the label with another electrifying cut of forward-facing drum & bass. Comprising Jake Hicks and Jack Pike, the pair have been steadily carving a name for themselves across imprints like RAM, Viper, Program, and Pilot since 2017 — and with Jynx, they’re doubling down on the energetic, dancefloor-centric ethos that’s become their trademark.

From the opening bar, Jynx wastes no time setting the pace. A flurry of bubbling arpeggios trickles through the mix, providing an almost whimsical contrast to the controlled chaos that follows. Chopped-and-screwed female vocal stabs lend the track an eerie, glitched-out allure, as if echoing from a dream half-remembered. Beneath it all, the bassline gurgles with heavyweight intent — super wobbly, super satisfying — while the percussion erupts with high-energy drive, fusing crisp snares and splashy amen fills into a percussive barrage designed to move bodies.

It’s a sound that feels both cleanly engineered and wild at heart. There’s an almost hyperreal quality to the way Hillsdom balance texture and impact: one minute smooth and synthetic, the next loose and raw. Jynx walks that line with confidence, offering DJs a potent mid-set weapon and listeners a heady rush of sonics.

Reaffirming why Hillsdom have long been one of the underground’s most watchable acts, this latest Soulvent release hits hard, hits smart — and lands just in time for the festival season.

Out Friday 23rd May on Soulvent Records.
