Tim Exile, born Timothy Charles Shaw, is a British electronic music producer and performer renowned for his innovative contributions to drum and bass, breakcore, and IDM. A classically trained violinist, he began experimenting with electronic music at the age of 12, driven by a passion for blending traditional musicianship with technology.
During his time at Durham University, where he studied philosophy and electroacoustic composition, Exile was introduced to the drum and bass scene. His early productions earned him releases on influential labels such as Moving Shadow and Beta Recordings, marking his arrival in the late 1990s. His debut album, Pro Agonist, released in 2005, showcased a bold and genre-defying style that blended chaotic rhythms with intricate sound design.
Frustrated by the limitations of traditional DJing setups, Tim Exile began developing custom performance tools using the Reaktor software platform. This allowed him to create improvisational live performances, blending spontaneity with technical precision. His pioneering approach attracted the attention of Native Instruments, with whom he later collaborated to develop innovative audio tools.
In 2016, Exile introduced Endlesss, a collaborative music-making app designed to facilitate real-time musical interaction. This platform embodied his passion for merging creativity with technology, making high-level musical collaboration accessible to users worldwide. With a career defined by fearless experimentation and technical ingenuity, Tim Exile remains a trailblazer in both drum and bass and the wider electronic music landscape.
