Darren Ellis, known professionally as Undercover Agent, was a seminal figure in the jungle and drum and bass scene. Beginning his DJ career in 1983, Ellis initially used cassette decks at house parties before progressing to Technics 1210 turntables by 1988. His eclectic sets spanned hip-hop, hardcore, acid house, and jungle, showcasing his versatility and deep understanding of electronic music.
In 1989, Ellis co-founded the pirate radio station Cyndicut FM, which became a pivotal platform for emerging artists such as Andy C, Embee, M.A.T.T. (Ego Trippin), and Majistrate. This venture significantly contributed to the proliferation of jungle and drum and bass music during its formative years, cementing Ellis's role as a key influencer in the genre's development.
As a producer, Ellis released music under various aliases, including Undercover Agent, Splash, and M.T.S., on esteemed labels like Juice Records, Deejay Recordings, Sub Base, Suburban Base, and his own Splash Recordings. Tracks such as Barracuda, Oh Gosh, Dub Plate Circles, and Hypnosis are celebrated as genre-defining works. Notably, his 1995 track Babylon, released under the alias Splash, is regarded as one of the most seminal jungle anthems.
Ellis's influence extended through collaborations and remixes, with his work being reinterpreted by prominent artists including Zinc, Brockie & Ed Solo, DJ SS, Ray Keith, Bladerunner, Decoder, DJ Trace, Ego Trippin, Mampi Swift, and Dillinja. His enduring impact on the jungle and drum and bass community was evident until his passing on 20 March 2024, after battling health issues. His legacy continues to inspire and shape the genre.
