Aphrodite, born Gavin King in 1968 in Aberystwyth, Wales, is a pioneering British DJ and producer renowned for his contributions to jungle and drum and bass. Known as one of the genre's founding figures, Aphrodite played a crucial role in popularising drum and bass in the 1990s. He co-founded the influential Urban Takeover label and was one half of the breakbeat hardcore duo Urban Shakedown, known for the track Some Justice, which became a UK Top 40 hit.
His 1999 self-titled debut album featured iconic tracks such as Bad Ass (with Micky Finn) and BM Funkster, cementing his place in drum and bass history. Aphrodite's sound, characterised by infectious basslines and high-energy rhythms, earned him global recognition and extensive touring across major festivals and clubs.
Follow-up albums like Aftershock (2002) and Break in Reality (2007) showcased his continued evolution as a producer. Beyond production, Aphrodite's label, Aphrodite Recordings, remains a vital platform for jungle and drum and bass talent.
With decades of experience, Aphrodite continues to influence new generations of drum and bass enthusiasts, maintaining his status as one of the genre's true legends.
