DJ SS, born Leroy Small in Leicester, England, is a foundational figure in the drum and bass scene. Starting as a hip-hop and rare groove DJ under the alias Scratchen Stein, he transitioned into breakbeat hardcore and jungle in the early 1990s. Alongside his partner Eidris, DJ SS promoted legendary raves such as Total Kaos and played a key role in shaping the UK rave culture.
In 1991, DJ SS co-founded Formation Records, a label instrumental in launching the careers of artists like Tango, John B, and Twisted Individual. His seminal track The Lighter, released in 1995, remains one of the most iconic jungle anthems to date. Formation Records became a cornerstone for the development of drum and bass, spawning over 30 sub-labels and countless classic releases.
DJ SS is celebrated for his contributions as both a producer and DJ, regularly touring worldwide and showcasing his distinctive style on radio platforms like BBC 1Xtra. With a career spanning over three decades, his legacy within drum and bass is indisputable, and his influence continues to shape the genre's future.
