Ray Keith, born in Colchester, Essex, is a seminal figure in the evolution of jungle and drum and bass music. Influenced by jazz, funk, and soul, he began DJing in the 1980s across Essex and Suffolk before immersing himself in London's acid house and rave scenes. His early remix of Orbital's Chime in 1990, officially released in 1992, marked his entry into music production.
In 1994, Keith established Dread Recordings, a label that became synonymous with the bass-heavy yet soulful sound characteristic of his productions. Under various aliases, including Dark Soldier, Renegade, and Terrorist, he released influential tracks such as Terrorist and Chopper, which are now considered classics in the genre. His remix portfolio extends to artists like Moby and Shades of Rhythm, further cementing his status as a versatile producer.
Throughout his career, Keith has collaborated with notable figures in the drum and bass scene, including Kenny Ken and Shy FX. His nephew, Peter O'Grady, known professionally as Joy Orbison, continues the family's musical legacy as a respected DJ and producer. Keith's influence is also evident through his mentorship and support of emerging artists via Dread Recordings.
