Phetsta, born Whetu Kay, is an Australian drum and bass and dubstep producer from Perth. Known for his technical precision and innovative sound design, he has become a prominent figure in the global bass music scene.
Phetsta first gained recognition in 2005 after signing exclusively with Technique Recordings, following earlier releases on the pioneering netlabel Kinematic320. His breakout release, The Congo EP, entered the UK Drum & Bass Top 10 sales charts and was hailed as a "production masterpiece" by Knowledge Magazine. Collaborations with fellow Perth artist ShockOne resulted in acclaimed tracks like The Sun and Cyclones, which won 'Best Tune' at the 2008 Perth Dance Music Awards and gained widespread airplay, including a top-three spot on Triple J's Super Request.
In 2011, Phetsta released the Prism EP, featuring the hit single Run You Down with vocalist Reija Lee. The track achieved significant success, ranking as the 6th most-viewed music video on YouTube on the day of its release. Later that year, his collaboration with ShockOne on Crucify Me reached the top of both the Track It Down Drum & Bass and Dubstep charts, holding the Beatport Drum & Bass top spot for six consecutive weeks.
Renowned for his energetic DJ sets, Phetsta has performed at major festivals and clubs across Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and Europe. His music continues to receive support from leading names in the industry, including Pendulum and Skream & Benga.
