Rebel MC

Rebel MC, born Michael Alec Anthony West on 27 August 1964 in Islington, London, is a pioneering British producer and toaster who has significantly influenced the evolution of jungle music. In the late 1980s, he co-founded the group Double Trouble, achieving mainstream success with hits like Just Keep Rockin' and Street Tuff, the latter reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart. These tracks blended hip house rhythms with pop sensibilities, marking Rebel MC as a notable figure in the UK's burgeoning dance music scene.

Transitioning from pop-rap to a sound deeply rooted in his cultural heritage, Rebel MC released his second album, Black Meaning Good, in 1991. This work fused hardcore techno with dub basslines and featured collaborations with reggae artists such as Barrington Levy and Tenor Fly. The album's innovative blend of genres presaged the emergence of jungle music, showcasing Rebel MC's commitment to integrating traditional reggae elements into contemporary dance music.

Under various aliases, including Conquering Lion and Congo Natty, Rebel MC continued to shape the jungle scene throughout the 1990s.
