Rueben, born Jelle, is a Dutch drum and bass producer and DJ renowned for his innovative approach to the genre. He began his musical journey as one half of the duo Ordure, collaborating with Jesse to explore various styles within drum and bass, including neurofunk, halftime, and deeper influences. Their work was characterised by experimentation and a willingness to push the boundaries of the genre.
In his solo project, Rueben has delved deeper into his personal experiences, infusing his music with complex synth work, intricate melodies, and vocal collaborations. His first release under this alias was a remix of Grey Code's Simple Things, which he reworked for the Music Squad label. This track was particularly significant to Rueben, as Simple Things was one of his favourite tunes, and remixing it allowed him to showcase his evolving sound.
Following this, Rueben released the Memories EP on Overview, marking his first full body of work under the Rueben alias. This EP featured vocal collaborations from PHI NIX and MC Gusto, pushing his music into new realms and demonstrating his growth as an artist. The EP's track No Need To even included a sample of Overview label manager Peter in the bathtub, highlighting Rueben's playful and experimental approach to production.
Rueben's contributions to the drum and bass scene are marked by his willingness to experiment and evolve, both as part of Ordure and as a solo artist. His work continues to influence and inspire within the genre, reflecting his dedication to pushing musical boundaries and exploring new creative territories.
