The Mountain Bass Experience: Drum & Bass Reimagined in the Heart of the Mountains

What if your next liquid DnB set came with sunset views over untouched peaks, a tight-knit crew of like-minded souls, and the kind of connection you can’t get in a sweaty club at 4am? Welcome to the Mountain Bass Experience – a truly unique, off-grid celebration of music, nature and community that’s quietly rewriting the rules of event culture.

Born from passion and built on purpose, this annual micro-festival swaps VIP booths and booming arenas for soul-stirring sets under mountain skies, with a 100-person limit that makes everyone part of the family. Forget the mainstream – this is drum and bass with heart, driven entirely by love for the craft, the culture, and the people keeping it alive.

Not your average rave: where liquid DnB meets nature, community, and raw creativity

Forget sticky floors and warehouse walls – this is drum and bass as you’ve never experienced it before. Nestled in breathtaking remote landscapes across Europe, the Mountain Bass Experience is flipping the script on event culture with a soul-nourishing blend of liquid DnB, nature immersion, and genuine community spirit.

Organised by a team of just two volunteers, this annual non-profit music retreat limits attendance to 100 people, creating an intimate environment where every artist, raver, and crew member becomes part of the family. With past editions held in Andorra and the Sierra Nevada, and the 2025 edition set to land in Spain’s stunning Picos de Europa, Mountain Bass offers a transformative alternative to the mainstream festival circuit.

A DIY Movement with a Mission

At its core, Mountain Bass is a response to the increasingly commercial and restrictive world of music events. As the grassroots scene battles rising costs, dwindling venues, and an industry obsessed with follower counts, this team is carving out a different path – one that prioritises artist development, inclusion, sustainability, and human connection.

They don’t chase profit. They don’t book based on clout. Instead, they build unique experiences in off-grid locations that require serious dedication and local know-how to secure. And every single penny earned goes directly back into making it happen.

“We’ve applied for funding three times. We still haven’t had a penny. Everything comes out of our own pockets,” says co-founder Matt Vinton. “But we’re not stopping. Because we believe this is the future the scene needs.”

More Than a Party: A Full-Scale Music Retreat

While the soundtrack leans toward liquid DnB – melodic, emotive and perfectly suited to wide open skies – this is no ordinary rave. Alongside intimate headline sets and open-deck sessions, the event blends wholesome, social, and mindful activities: sound healing, astronomy under the stars, pub quizzes, group excursions, and nature hikes are all part of the itinerary.

And because of the small group size, everyone gets involved. There’s a WhatsApp group that stays active year-round. Artists collaborate. Friendships form. Lives are changed.

Championing Talent, Not Algorithms

In a world where gigs too often go to the loudest accounts rather than the best selectors, Mountain Bass takes a refreshing approach: they host a DJ competition where the winner supports a global headliner – selected on skills, not social reach.

This commitment to new talent has already sparked success stories, with previously overlooked DJs going on to land bookings and label signings after the event. Others have found the encouragement they needed to keep going, or even change careers entirely.

The diversity on show speaks for itself too – with a 50% ethnic and 80% female headliner line-up in past years, plus a strong LGBTQ+ presence throughout. It’s inclusive by design, not marketing.

Sustainability at Every Turn

Mountain Bass doesn’t just minimise its footprint – it actively leaves places better than it found them. Each attendee is asked to collect a bag of litter from nature. Sound systems are innovatively set up to reduce noise pollution in the environment. Carpooling and local transport are encouraged, and every move is made with care and respect for the communities that host them.

They build relationships in local languages, work with nearby businesses, and bring life to areas often overlooked by traditional tourism – all while creating unforgettable experiences for the people who travel from across the globe to be part of it.

Why It Matters Now More Than Ever

As the UK nightlife and events scene faces unprecedented challenges, initiatives like Mountain Bass represent a lifeline – not just for ravers, but for the culture itself. It's a masterclass in what’s possible when passion, purpose, and community come before profit.

This is drum and bass with integrity. An experience rooted in nature, connection, and a shared love of music. And if that sounds like the future, that’s because it is.
