Black Barrel, the alias of Russian producer and DJ Evgenii Khmel, has carved a niche in the drum and bass scene with his meticulously crafted soundscapes and deep, intricate rhythms. Hailing from St. Petersburg, his journey into electronic music began with influences from techno, hip-hop, and indie rock, which have all contributed to his versatile production style.

Introduced to drum and bass through the iconic Pirate Station radio broadcasts, Black Barrel’s fascination with the genre intensified after attending a live performance by Calyx & Teebee in 2012. This transformative experience inspired him to dedicate himself to music production. His early efforts quickly gained recognition, leading to releases on esteemed labels like Dispatch Recordings and Metalheadz.

Notable highlights in Black Barrel’s discography include his debut album, Last Frontier, released in 2018, and the Just Keep My Life album in 2021. His ability to blend atmospheric elements with heavy basslines is also showcased in the Side That You Can't Hide EP, released on Metalheadz in 2023. His tracks demonstrate a commitment to pushing the boundaries of drum and bass while maintaining a distinct, recognisable style.

Beyond his primary alias, Black Barrel explores other sonic territories under the monikers Leo Cap for dubstep and Yougeen for techno. His performances at renowned events such as Fabric, Rampage, and Outlook Festival highlight his versatility as a live act.
