Fred V has always had that instinct for melody, that slightly wistful edge that sits just under the surface. With Mistakes, released 9 April on Hospital Records, he leans further into something darker. Not a full shift, not a reinvention, but definitely a step sideways into a more introspective space.
It starts early. Those opening diminished chords set the tone almost immediately, a bit uneasy, a bit unresolved. You can feel where it’s heading before the drums even land. And when they do, there’s no rush about it. The first drop comes in clean, but it carries weight, subtle at first, then properly opening out as the bassline settles in.
The acid touches are interesting. Not overpowering, not screaming for attention, just threaded through the low end in a way that gives the track a slightly restless energy. It never quite sits still. That tension between movement and restraint is probably where the tune does its best work.
Then you’ve got Luxtides, whose vocal sits right in that sweet spot between delicate and direct. There’s an R&B influence there, sure, but it’s not polished to the point of losing character. Slightly raw in places, which actually helps. It gives the track a bit of emotional friction, something to push against the cleaner production.
It’s worth noting how this follows on from Horizon with WHAT EVA earlier in the year. That track hinted at a deeper direction, but Mistakes feels more committed to it. Less about balance, more about leaning in. You can hear Fred V getting comfortable in this space, exploring the edges rather than sitting in the middle.
From a DJ perspective, it’s not an obvious peak-time weapon, and that’s probably Fred V's intention. This is more of a transition piece, something to shift the mood, pull a set into a slightly more reflective zone before things ramp back up again.
And there’s a confidence in that restraint. No need to overbuild, no need to force impact. Just letting the track breathe, letting the details carry it through.
Mistakes doesn’t try to do too much. It just does its thing, quietly, precisely, and with a bit of depth that sticks with you longer than you expect.
