Shades is a collaborative project between Alix Perez, a Belgian-born producer known for his work in drum and bass, and Eprom, an American artist celebrated for his innovative approach to bass music. The duo's partnership merges their distinct styles, resulting in a unique sound that pushes the boundaries of electronic music.
Alix Perez gained prominence in the drum and bass scene with releases on labels such as Shogun Audio and Exit Records. His collaborations with artists like Noisia, Foreign Beggars, and dBridge further solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the genre. Eprom, hailing from the USA, earned recognition through his experimental take on bass music, attracting support from notable figures including Gaslamp Killer and D-Styles.
The two artists first crossed paths at the Northern Bass festival in New Zealand during the 2013/2014 season. Their initial studio session took place at Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles, where they worked on Foreign Beggars' Modus EP. This collaboration led to the formation of Shades, with their debut self-titled EP released on Alpha Pup Records in 2015. The EP showcased their combined talents, featuring tracks like The Serpent and Minotaur.
Shades have since released multiple EPs and a full-length album, In Praise of Darkness, on Deadbeats. Their music is characterized by slanted grooves, deep basslines, and intricate compositions that defy traditional genre classifications. The duo has performed at various festivals, including Low End Theory Festival in Los Angeles, sharing stages with artists such as Flying Lotus and Thundercat. Their innovative sound continues to influence the electronic music landscape, earning them a dedicated following worldwide.
