Kung Talks Evolution, His Return to Drum & Bass, and New Dirtbox Recordings Release

After stepping back from the spotlight, Kung has returned with a refined sound and a fresh release on Dirtbox Recordings. Known for his work with RAM Records, Eatbrain, and C4C, Kung has always been an artist who brings weight and energy to his productions. Now, having spent time honing his craft, he’s back with a different perspective—one that leans into melody and texture while maintaining his signature impact.

We caught up with him via email to talk about his journey, the changing landscape of drum and bass, and what fans can expect from him next—including exciting plans for his own label.

It’s been a minute since we last heard from you! What’s been happening in your world, and what led to this return?

Yeah, been gone for a while innit lol, well i moved back to Spain about two years ago and been working in music nonstop since then. Haven’t been really sending to no labels or anything just focus how to evolve my sound.

Your production style has always carried a signature weight. Have you made any major changes to your approach since your last release?

Deffo! Im a bit older now and not too into that neuro sound i was around 2012 or so, im trying to get a more polished and tidy sound, while still having some energy to it.

The new release on Dirtbox Recordings landed recently. What can you tell us about the project and what went into making it?

These two tracks came up quite easily tbh. The theme on this release was to make two tracks very playable but at the same time have some different elements that you dont see in these type of roller tunes.

Looking back at your work with labels like RAM, Eatbrain, and C4C, how do you feel your sound has evolved over the years?

Quite a lot tbf! I still make high energy music but, im more focused on melodies and textures rather then bass sound design and sharp snares which i still do, but its more about the feeling than the rage i used to look for, i think this release kinda shows it.

Stepping away from the scene for a while can change perspectives. Has your time away influenced how you approach music now?

Probably, when you don’t go to play gigs that often you tend to get a bit softer, you aren’t influenced by the energy in the dance as much you try to get to make music that evokes another type of feeling.

Drum and bass has continued to shift and evolve in your absence. What’s your take on the current state of the genre, and where do you see it heading?

Well, the only thing I'm gonna say about this topic is, when i started making music, i always wanted to make my own thing being different, is 2025 now and the tools evolved in a way that you can really make anything you want, but instead we trying to sound just like the trendy formula that goes on currently, which kinda makes me sad. Still some unique producers and incredible music tho!

You’ve always been known for high-energy, dancefloor-driven tracks. Has your time away changed how you think about making tunes for clubs and festivals?

As i said before i got more mature so i guess yeah a bit, the sound has evolved over the years, but i still make some tunes that are all about the energy, still love seeing people skank like crazy for a filthy tune!

How did the link-up with Dirtbox come about, and what was it about this release that felt like the right moment for your return?

I met Lee long ago and he always supported me, he been asking to make a release on his label for a while, and finally we got it! As i said before i haven’t been thinking about timing for a while just when things felt ready we made it.

Now that you’re back, can we expect a steady flow of releases, or are you taking things as they come?

Yeah, there’s a couple of tracks coming out kinda soonish on another label, after that it will be about my own label which i hope to get all set soon

For fans who have been waiting for your return, what’s the one thing you want them to know about what’s coming next?

Like i said, been working to set my own label for a while now, ive been working hard on the graphic design and music lately to get out there the product i think represents me the best. Really looking forward to get this done and so people can hear and see what ive been working on!

With his latest release on Dirtbox Recordings, Kung is stepping into a new era—one that reflects both his growth as an artist and his commitment to staying true to his craft. As he gears up for more releases and the launch of his own label, fans can expect plenty more to come. Keep an eye out—Kung is just getting started.
