Waeys returns to Overview Music with If Only, a collaborative three-track release developed through studio sessions with Wingz, Klinical and GROUND. Each production explores a different corner of Waeys' sound, but the EP remains connected by detailed sound design, evolving arrangements and an emphasis on movement rather than repetition. From stripped-back pressure to brighter melodic passages, it sits naturally within the forward-looking sound Overview has established.
Opening track Yellowjacket immediately establishes the pace. Crisp, driving drums sit above a weighty bassline that repeatedly gathers momentum before resetting its energy, creating a relentless sense of movement without becoming predictable. Spacious reverbs and high, breath-like textures give the mix room to expand, while a distorted bass synth occasionally tears through the arrangement with a low growl that feels almost animalistic. The contrast between pressure and space allows each new element to arrive with impact.
If Only shifts towards the more melodic side of the release without losing its dancefloor focus. A heavily reverberant break opens the track, sounding as though it is travelling down a long, empty corridor. Bright pads stab in and out of the mix while an old-school, robotic synth motif runs around the scale, adding a playful edge to the otherwise spacious atmosphere. Those melodic details provide contrast against the rolling rhythm section, making this the EP's most understated and fluid moment.
Closing track She Asks Me Why introduces the most cinematic setting of the three. Its opening ambience suggests a dense rainforest or something drawn from the world of Jurassic Park before an assertive rap performance cuts through the soundscape. That aggression is picked up by a bassline that buzzes with the character of electrical interference, while additional bass stabs complete an evolving riff beneath it.
The breakdown brings the vocal back into a wide plate reverb as string-like synths gradually rebuild the tension. When the second drop arrives, the production takes on a more industrial and metallic quality, giving the closing section a distinct character rather than simply repeating what came before.
Although shaped through collaboration, If Only retains a clear production identity throughout. Its three tracks move between relentless low-end pressure, spacious melodic writing and darker cinematic textures while remaining focused on the dancefloor. The result is a varied but coherent EP that reflects both Waeys' range and the collaborative culture surrounding Overview Music.
