Digital & Spirit: Drum and Bass Biography, Releases and Upcoming Events

Stephen Carr, professionally known as Digital, is a distinguished British drum and bass producer and DJ hailing from Ipswich, England. His deep-rooted connection to music began in his youth, influenced by his father's operation of a sound system for nearly three decades. This early exposure to reggae and dub profoundly shaped Digital's signature basslines and dub-infused soundscapes.

Digital's production career commenced in the mid-1990s, with his solo debut track, Touch Me, released on Timeless Recordings in 1995. This was swiftly followed by the seminal track Spacefunk, also on Timeless, which became a classic within the drum and bass community. The track's enduring appeal led to remixes by notable artists such as Goldie, Photek, and Doc Scott.

In 1998, Digital partnered with fellow producer Duncan Busto, known as Spirit, to form the label Phantom Audio. Their collaboration yielded the iconic track Phantom Force, which remains a staple in DJ sets to this day. The duo's synergy was evident in their ability to blend deep, rolling basslines with intricate drum patterns, contributing significantly to the genre's evolution.

Beyond his work with Spirit, Digital has maintained a prolific solo career, releasing music on esteemed labels including Metalheadz, where he contributed to every Platinum Breakz album. His commitment to the scene extends to education, as he shares his expertise through platforms like Education & Bass, mentoring aspiring producers and DJs.

Tragically, Spirit passed away in August 2018, marking the end of a pivotal partnership in drum and bass history. Despite this loss, Digital continues to honour their legacy, performing and producing music that reflects the depth and innovation they brought to the genre.
