Makoto Shimizu, professionally known as Makoto, is a Japanese drum and bass producer and DJ celebrated for his soulful, jazz-infused sound. Born and raised in Tokyo, he was deeply influenced by a range of music genres, from classical to soul and funk. Inspired by Ryuichi Sakamoto's score for The Last Emperor, Makoto decided to pursue a career in music.
Signed to Good Looking Records in the late 1990s, Makoto became a key figure in the liquid drum and bass movement. His debut album, Human Elements (2003), showcased his signature style of warm melodies and intricate drum programming. Subsequent releases, including Souled Out and Salvation, further solidified his reputation.
Makoto's collaborations span artists like LTJ Bukem, DJ Marky, and MC Conrad. Known for his immersive live sets, he continues to perform globally at renowned festivals and clubs.
With a career spanning over two decades, Makoto remains one of the most respected and influential figures in the global drum and bass scene.
