Primate

Primate, born Marcel Matheussen in Ghent, Belgium, is a prominent figure in the drum and bass scene, particularly within the jump-up subgenre. Growing up in a family of artists, including writers, theatre practitioners, and jazz musicians, he began exploring music production at the age of 11. Initially performing at local events, Primate developed a passion for electronic music, honing his skills and cultivating a distinctive sound characterised by screeching basslines and hard-hitting drums.

In 2018, Primate made his debut in the drum and bass scene, marking the beginning of his rise as a notable jump-up headliner. Over time, his sound has evolved, incorporating more melodic and technical elements while maintaining his gritty roots. This progression is evident in his diverse productions, showcasing his versatility as a producer.

Primate’s dynamic performances have earned him spots at significant events, including the Antwerp City Festival in November 2024. Collaborations with fellow artists, such as Captain Bass on the track Everything You Say, released under Elevate Records, further highlight his influence and reach within the drum and bass community.
