Top Cat, born Anthony Codrington, is a legendary British MC and vocalist renowned for his contributions to reggae, dancehall, and drum and bass. Emerging from Manchester, he began his career in the 1980s on the UK reggae sound system circuit, gaining recognition for his sharp lyrical style and charismatic stage presence.
His breakthrough came with Love Me Sess, which topped the UK reggae charts for six weeks in 1989. He went on to release hits like Request the Style and Push Up Unu Lighter, collaborating with labels such as Fashion Records and Congo Natty, where he became a key figure in the jungle scene.
Top Cat is also known for founding his own label, Nine Lives Records, which became a platform for his pioneering sound. His influence extends across multiple genres, including jungle, reggae, and breaks, with tracks like Wine Up Ya Body becoming timeless classics.
A true veteran of the UK music scene, Top Cat's powerful lyrics, signature flow, and genre-spanning career have solidified his legacy as one of the most influential MCs in drum and bass history.
