Total Science, comprising Jason Greenhalgh and Paul Smith, are a distinguished drum and bass duo from Oxford, England. Their musical journey began in 1987 when they met on the Blackbird Leys estate, united by a shared passion for hip hop. This connection led them to delve into record collecting, DJing, and eventually music production. Greenhalgh initiated his solo career under the alias Q Project with the track Freestyle Fanatic in 1991.
In 1994, Greenhalgh and Smith began collaborating under the name Funky Technicians, releasing You Gotta Believe, which marked a shift from the darkside movement towards labels like Lucky Spin, Basement, and Good Looking. After six years of producing singles for various artists, they established their own label, CIA Records, in late 1997, with assistance from Brillo of Timeless Recordings. Their debut album, Advance, released in 2000, showcased their versatility, incorporating downtempo experiments alongside their signature drum and bass sound.
Throughout their career, Total Science has been instrumental in shaping the drum and bass genre, releasing numerous singles and albums on esteemed labels such as Metalheadz, CIA Records, and Hospital Records. Their track Champion Sound became an anthem in the drum and bass community, solidifying their status as influential figures in the genre.
Beyond their solo work, Total Science has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including Calibre, Break, and Digital. They have also remixed tracks for prominent figures like Goldie, LTJ Bukem, and Roni Size, further cementing their influence in the drum and bass scene. Their dedication to the genre and continuous evolution of their sound has earned them a dedicated fan base and a reputation for delivering electrifying live performances.
