Funky Technicians is a drum and bass alias created in 1994 by Jason Greenhalgh and Paul Smith, better known as Total Science. Based in Oxford, the pair used the name to explore a more atmospheric and introspective side of their sound, sitting away from the heavier edges of their core productions.
The project became closely associated with the mid-90s movement towards deeper, jazz-leaning drum and bass, where space, tone, and musicality carried as much weight as rhythm. Releases under the Funky Technicians name often leaned into that mood, with drifting pads, fluid breakwork, and a sense of restraint that defined the era.
Their most recognised work, Airtight from 1996, stands as a defining piece of that sound. Its extended arrangement and immersive atmosphere found a natural home within the wider progression of intelligent drum and bass, including its appearance on LTJ Bukem’s Logical Progression mix, where it reached a broader audience while maintaining its underground identity.
Funky Technicians also reflected a wider shift happening at the time, where artists were beginning to move beyond purely technical or dark frameworks into something more expressive. That crossover between jazz influence, ambient textures, and rolling jungle rhythms placed the alias firmly within the evolving landscape of late-90s drum and bass.
Alongside this work, Greenhalgh and Smith continued to build their reputation through multiple aliases and projects, eventually establishing C.I.A. as a key platform for their output. Funky Technicians remains a focused snapshot of that earlier period, capturing a moment where drum and bass opened out, slowed down slightly, and let the atmosphere do the talking.
