MC Spyda, also known as Black Tarantula, is a legendary figure in the drum and bass scene, celebrated globally for his distinctive vocal technique and reggae-influenced delivery. With roots in dancehall MCing, Spyda's journey began in Antigua at the age of 11, where he recorded his first track with Colin Ellis, also known as Natty of the Supatone Soundsystem. Upon returning to the UK in the early 1980s, Spyda quickly made a name for himself in the soundsystem culture, captivating audiences with his unmistakable style.
Spyda's transition into drum and bass came with his debut release Mo Fire alongside Bad Company and The Rawhill Crew, which became an anthem and firmly established his presence in the genre. Following this success, he collaborated with renowned producers such as DJ Fresh, Benny Page, Matrix & Futurebound, and Aquasky, solidifying his reputation as one of the most dynamic MCs in the scene.
His breakthrough into mainstream recognition came with his guest vocals on Tarantula by Pendulum, featured on their iconic debut album Hold Your Colour. The track became a global drum and bass anthem, introducing Spyda's unique style to a worldwide audience. Later, Rob Swire invited him to contribute to Knife Party's projects, further expanding Spyda's reach into the EDM sphere.
