Stephen Bedford, known as Evil E, is a UK-based jungle artist whose roots trace back to the late 1980s acid house movement. Inspired by nights at Manchester’s The Haçienda, he began DJing in 1989 as the scene evolved through house, techno, and hardcore into jungle, the sound that would define his direction.
His style centres on classic Amen break programming and deep reggae-influenced basslines, reflecting a strong connection to early rave culture. After stepping away from music for over two decades to focus on family life and career, Evil E returned in 2019, adapting to modern production tools while maintaining a distinctly 90s-informed approach.
Since his return, he has achieved multiple chart successes on Juno, including No.1 positions, alongside releases such as Afterlife and the Badman Sound EP. His music has appeared on labels including Soultribe Music, Dropzone, and Jungle Tings Audio, marking a consistent presence within the contemporary jungle landscape.
Following serious health challenges, including strokes in 2021 and 2024, Bedford rebuilt both his daily life and creative process. Today, music serves as both rehabilitation and expression, with his work driven by a clear focus on craft, resilience, and a lasting connection to the foundations of jungle.
