Declan Curran, professionally known as Fixate, is a London-based producer and DJ who has become a prominent figure in the drum and bass scene. His musical journey began around 2006, experimenting with genres such as hip-hop, grime, and dubstep. It wasn't until a collaborative session with Chimpo that he ventured into the 170 BPM territory, finding a natural affinity with the tempo and subsequently immersing himself in the drum and bass genre.
In 2014, Fixate made his official debut with the release of Pum Pum / System Malfunction on Diffrent Music. This initial offering showcased his innovative approach, blending disjointed rhythms with a fusion of genres, capturing the attention of notable figures like Toddla T, Sam Binga, Alix Perez, and dBridge. The following year, he solidified his presence in the scene with the Throwback Therapy EP on dBridge's Exit Records, further demonstrating his versatility and unique sound palette.
Fixate's signature style is characterised by an eclectic mix of influences, traversing drum and bass, jungle, dubstep, grime, techno, house, and dub. His productions are known for their unconventional grooves and refusal to adhere to formulaic structures, resulting in a distinctive and forward-thinking sound that sets him apart from his contemporaries.
Beyond his solo work, Fixate has been involved in notable collaborations and projects. He was a key contributor to the Richie Brains collective, a project that brought together several innovative producers within the drum and bass community. His track Rig Monkey, a collaboration with Skeptical, exemplifies his ability to blend dense, dubby technoid elements with halftime rhythms, showcasing his commitment to pushing the boundaries of the genre.
Throughout his career, Fixate has maintained a strong relationship with Exit Records, releasing multiple EPs and the mini-LP What Goes Around Comes Around, all of which have been met with critical acclaim. His contributions have cemented his reputation as one of the most exciting talents in UK bass music today, continually challenging and redefining the drum and bass landscape.
