Dev Pandya, known professionally as Paradox, is a British drum and bass producer and DJ celebrated for his innovative approach to breakbeat music. With a career spanning over three decades, he has been instrumental in pioneering the drumfunk subgenre, which emphasises intricate, evolving drum patterns derived from obscure breakbeats.
Pandya's musical journey commenced in 1990 with the formation of Mixrace alongside DJ Trax. Their early releases on Moving Shadow Records in 1992 marked the beginning of a prolific career. By 1996, Pandya had introduced his Paradox and Alaska aliases, each exploring different facets of drum and bass. While Paradox delves into deep atmospherics and complex rhythms, Alaska focuses on ambient productions, with releases on labels such as Good Looking and Renegade Recordings.
Throughout his career, Paradox has collaborated with notable artists including Nucleus and Seba, producing a series of influential tracks that have left a lasting impact on the genre. His discography boasts over 200 vinyl releases and ten full-length albums, featured on esteemed labels like Reinforced Records, Metalheadz, and his own imprints, Paradox Music and Arctic Music.
A distinctive aspect of Pandya's artistry is his commitment to live performances using vintage equipment. He is renowned for utilising a 1992 Commodore Amiga 1200 computer and an Akai S3000XL sampler during his shows, offering audiences an authentic and immersive experience. This dedication to traditional hardware underscores his respect for the foundational elements of drum and bass music.
In addition to his solo endeavours, Paradox has achieved significant milestones, such as collaborating with jazz legend Herbie Hancock on a drum and bass-jazz fusion project. This partnership exemplifies his versatility and willingness to transcend genre boundaries, further solidifying his reputation as a forward-thinking artist.
Residing in Vilnius, Lithuania, Pandya continues to produce and perform, contributing to the evolution of drum and bass. His unwavering passion for breakbeat culture and his innovative spirit ensure that Paradox remains a seminal figure within the electronic music landscape.
