Renegade, the alias of British DJ and producer Ray Keith, is widely regarded as a foundational figure in the evolution of jungle and drum and bass. Emerging from Colchester, Essex, Keith began his musical journey in the late 1980s as a DJ, spinning rare groove, hip-hop, and early rave tracks. His technical prowess and passion for breakbeat-driven music quickly set him apart within the growing underground scene.
In 1994, under the name Renegade, Keith released the seminal track Terrorist. The track became a cornerstone of jungle music, revered for its haunting piano intro, deep Reese bassline, and meticulously chopped breakbeats. Drawing inspiration from Japan's Nightporter, Renegade created a sonic blueprint that would influence generations of jungle and drum and bass producers.
Ray Keith’s contributions extended far beyond his work as Renegade. He founded Dread Recordings, a label that became synonymous with dark, atmospheric jungle sounds. Through the label, he nurtured emerging talent and solidified his role as both a producer and a tastemaker. His work under both his own name and the Renegade alias earned him widespread respect and acclaim across the electronic music community.
