Subject 13, the alias of David Stewart, is a pioneering drum and bass producer and DJ from Hackney, London. Emerging in the early 1990s, Stewart initially produced hardcore tracks under the name Eternity before transitioning to drum and bass. By 1995, he adopted the Subject 13 moniker and began fusing jazz and soul influences with the genre, carving out a distinct niche in the scene.
In 1997, Subject 13 released The Black Steele Project, his debut album, which showcased his innovative blend of melodic textures and intricate breakbeats. The album earned widespread acclaim, cementing his reputation as a trailblazer in drum and bass. His work on notable labels such as Creative Source and Good Looking Records further established his influence within the genre.
