Paul Saunders, known professionally as Wax Doctor, is a British drum and bass producer and DJ hailing from Slough, Berkshire. Born on 28 November 1971, Saunders began his musical journey as a DJ in the late 1980s, balancing his passion for music with a career in football, including a stint as a reserve with Reading and later Crystal Palace.
Transitioning to music production in the early 1990s, Wax Doctor became a pivotal figure in the evolution of drum and bass, particularly noted for pioneering a more melodic and atmospheric style. His early releases on Basement Records during 1992-93 showcased his techno roots, but collaborations with artists like Alex Reece signalled a shift towards jazz-infused drum and bass.
Throughout his career, Wax Doctor has released several influential tracks and EPs. Notable works include Kid Caprice (1994), The Spectrum / The Step (1995), and Heat (1996). His compilation album, Selected Works 94-96, released in 1998, encapsulates his contributions during a formative period for the genre.
