Source Direct, an English drum and bass act from St Albans, Hertfordshire, emerged in the mid-1990s as a pioneering force in the genre. Originally comprising childhood friends James Baker and Phil Aslett, the duo became renowned for their complex breakbeats, dark atmospheric samples, and abstract song structures, distinguishing them within the drum and bass scene.

Throughout their career, Source Direct released numerous influential tracks and EPs on esteemed labels such as Metalheadz, Good Looking Records, and Virgin Records. Notably, their EP Controlled Developments (1997) and album Exorcise the Demons (1999) showcased their innovative approach to production. Tracks like Call & Response, featured in the horror film Blade, further exemplified their ability to craft immersive and forward-thinking music.

In addition to their original productions, Source Direct contributed to the scene through various aliases, including Intensity, Sounds of Life, and Hokusai, allowing them to explore different facets of electronic music. Their work under these monikers expanded their influence and demonstrated their versatility as artists.

As live performers, Source Direct captivated audiences with their dynamic sets, featuring intricate rhythms and dark, atmospheric soundscapes. Their music gained recognition beyond the club scene, with contributions like the track "2097" to the soundtrack of the PlayStation game Wipeout 2097, released in 1996. Despite their relatively short-lived partnership, Source Direct's legacy endures, inspiring new generations of producers and fans within the drum and bass community.
