Commix, originally a trio from Cambridge, England, was formed in 2002 by George Levings, Guy Brewer, and Conrad Whittle. The group quickly became known for their unique approach to drum and bass, blending liquid funk with atmospheric, jazzy elements. They began their journey by releasing a series of influential 12-inch singles on labels such as Aquasonic, Tangent Recordings, Good Looking Records, Creative Source, and Brand.nu. Tracks like Feel Something (2003), Herbie (2004), and Surround (2004) set them apart from their peers and helped to establish their reputation in the drum and bass community.
After Whittle's departure, Commix continued as a duo, with Levings and Brewer continuing to innovate. In 2005, they signed with Goldie’s iconic label Metalheadz, marking a significant milestone in their career. Their track Satellite Song, featured on the Metalheadz Winter of Content compilation, became one of their most well-known works. This was followed by the release of Urban Legend / If I Should Fall, a 12-inch single that further solidified their place in the genre.
The duo’s debut album, Call to Mind, released in 2007, was a critical success, showcasing their distinct sound and technical proficiency. The album was notable for being one of the first artist albums released on the Metalheadz label since Goldie's Rufige Kru project. Over the years, Commix continued to explore new musical territory, remixing tracks for various artists including Bebel Gilberto, Adam F, and DJ Die, and their work continued to be lauded for its depth and innovation.
In 2012, Guy Brewer left the group, leaving Levings to carry the Commix name forward as a solo project. Levings has continued to evolve as a producer, with new material emerging on Commix’s SoundCloud page, which now focuses more on intricate sound design. In 2016, the duo's legacy was continued with the release of the Generation 1 sampler, marking a new chapter for Commix after a long hiatus and cementing their status as pioneers in the world of drum and bass.
