Mathis Mootz, born on 19 August 1976 in Wetzlar, Germany, is a prolific electronic musician and DJ best known by his stage name, The Panacea. With a foundation in classical music and experience as a member of the Windsbach Boys Choir, Mootz transitioned into electronic music after studying music engineering at the SAE Institute.
In 1996, under the moniker Panacea, Mootz began releasing dark drum and bass singles through the Chrome label, an offshoot of Force Inc Music Works. His debut album, Low Profile Darkness, released in 1997, was instrumental in pushing the techstep subgenre into harsher industrial and digital hardcore territories. Following this, he took over Chrome's A&R responsibilities, leading to its rebranding as Position Chrome, which became one of Germany's most notable drum and bass labels.
Throughout his career, The Panacea has been known for his energetic DJ sets that fuse drum and bass with industrial and hardcore elements. His discography includes influential albums such as Twisted Designz (1998), Phoenix Metabolism (1999), and German Engineering (2001). Additionally, Mootz explored dark ambient music under the alias m² (pronounced "Squaremeter"), releasing several albums that delve into minimalistic and brooding soundscapes.
As of January 2025, Mathis Mootz continues to be an influential figure in the electronic music scene, with a legacy that spans multiple genres and decades. His innovative approach to production and performance has left an indelible mark on the drum and bass community and beyond.
