Ulterior Motive, the British drum and bass duo comprising James Davidson and Greg Hepworth, originated from Bournemouth, UK. Formed in 2003, they quickly gained recognition for their fusion of technical prowess and dancefloor appeal, drawing inspiration from late-90s pioneers like Ed Rush & Optical.
Their debut single, Infrasonic / Holding On to Never, was released on Teebee's Subtitles label, marking the beginning of a series of influential tracks. In 2014, they unveiled their debut album, The Fourth Wall, on Metalheadz, further establishing their reputation within the genre. Notable tracks such as Featherweight and 2098 exemplify their distinctive sound.
Throughout their career, Ulterior Motive collaborated with esteemed artists including Jubei, Rockwell, and Zero T, contributing significantly to the drum and bass scene. They also remixed works for artists like Future Cut and Friction, showcasing their versatility and commitment to the genre's evolution.
As a DJ unit, Ulterior Motive performed at renowned venues and festivals worldwide, including Fabric, Star Warz, and Sun & Bass, captivating audiences with their dynamic sets. In 2017, they launched their own label, Guidance, further influencing the scene by providing a platform for emerging talent. In January 2021, after 11 years together, the duo announced their split, with both members pursuing individual projects thereafter.
